Homeownership Program
Habitat provides the opportunity for families to become homeowners.
Our aim is to create an environment of hope and dignity.
Habitat is not a handout, it is a hand up. Low interest mortgage loans make it possible for those with a lower income to become homeowners.
Participating in the Habitat program is hard work, but the stability provided by a permanent home is worth it.
You May Qualify
The Family Selection Committee looks at three factors when choosing families for participation in the program.
- Need for Housing
Does your current home have safety or accessibility issues? Do you not have enough space for your family? - Ability to Pay a Mortgage Payment
Are you free of any collections, delinquencies or bankruptcies? Are you able to pay a traditional monthly mortgage payment? - Willingness to Partner with Habitat
Can you perform 200 hours of sweat equity? Are you willing to participate in education and training programs?
Income Eligibility
A family’s gross household income must be sufficient to repay the cost of their home. This includes a monthly mortgage, real estate taxes, property insurance and utilities. To qualify for a Habitat Home, the family’s gross household income must be between 30%-60% of McLeod County’s Area Median Income

Application Program
Has home ownership always seemed like an impossible dream?
Habitat for Humanity is not a giveaway program, but a joint venture.
Families who benefit from this housing ministry are involved in the work at various levels investing at least 200 hours of sweat equity. This can be in the construction of their home or the home of another family, volunteering for fundraising events, public relation events or in the Habitat office.
- Volunteering reduces the monetary cost of the house
- Involvement in construction increases the personal involvement of each family member in their home
- Fosters the development of positive relationships with the community and Habitat
Homes are sold to the Partner Family, who pay a monthly, low interest, mortgage payment.
