History

Founded in 1994, Crow River Habitat for Humanity has built 18 homes, with construction of home #19 in Stewart being completed in late fall, 2009. Caring people are working hard in such areas as family support, family selection, construction, publicity, and fund raising. Individuals, churches, and other groups are donating funds, land, building materials, tools and equipment.

It costs approximately $95,000 - $110,000 to build a quality three-bedroom, one-bath home. Project funds come in the form of gifts and no-interest loans. Homes are sold, at cost, on 20 to 30-year interest-free mortgages held by Crow River Habitat for Humanity. Loan payments (approximately $550 - $650 per month) include principal, taxes, insurance, maintenance and are recycled to the building fund.

Homeowners invest 400 hours of "sweat equity" and a down payment of approximately $1000. Potential homeowners are screened by the family selection committee. A written application is followed by an extensive home visit. Applicants must have regular income sufficient to pay for their new Habitat house.
